Music and lyrics (for verses) based on a 16th-century Italian madrigal by Jacques Arcadelt (c. 1504-c. 1567). Opening line is in Italian (Ahimé, Ahimé, dov e’l bel viso) and means “Alas, alas, where is the beautiful face.”
